Course Information

The Machinist course at DBTI is a two-year, NSQF Level-4 programme under the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS). It prepares trainees to operate, set up, and maintain a variety of machine tools with precision. DBTI integrates Employability Skills, 21st-Century Skills, and the Don Bosco Plus Skill Portfolio, ensuring holistic training.

Job Role

A Machinist is responsible for producing precision parts and tools by operating and maintaining machines. Job tasks include interpreting technical drawings, setting up machine tools, precision machining, measuring, and quality control. DBTI-trained machinists are prepared for roles in production, R&D, and manufacturing industries.

Learning Outcomes

Assessment Criteria

Internal (Formative):

Practical work, assignments, projects, attendance.

Final (Summative):

All India Trade Test (AITT) by DGT leading to award of NTC. Unit tests and Quarterly Assessments.

Pass Marks:

  • 60% in Practical & Internal Assessment
  • 33% in Theory & Employability Skills

The evaluation system is based on two components:

Parent Communication

Periodical Reports are sent to the parents/guardians to inform them of the progress of the trainee. These reports must be signed by the parent/guardian and returned to the Institute authorities.

PTM (Parent-Teacher Meeting) is held after the first and third Assessments.

Assessment & Certification – Machinist

National Trade Certificate (NTC)

Trainees are registered under the Machinist trade and appear for the All-India Trade Test (AITT) conducted by NCVET, earning the National Trade Certificate (NTC).

DBTI Certificate

Each trainee also receives a DBTI Certificate as General Machine Operator (GMO) along with a Trainee Skill Portfolio documenting both technical and employability skills gained during training.

Terminal Examinations

Terminal Examinations are held in October, December, April and June.

Statement of Marks

Statement of Marks is issued at the end of every semester to the students giving details of marks obtained in the periodical assignments and term end examinations.

Certificate of Completion

A Certificate of Completion in one or more successfully completed courses/subjects is awarded to the trainee who has 85% attendance and has secured minimum of 40% marks in Theory and 60% of marks in Practical.

Certificate Fees

The Certificates are given free of charge, if taken within a month of withdrawal/completion of training or declaration of Board results. Otherwise Rs. 300 per year will be charged.

Railways, Ordnance factories, PSUs, and state-run corporations regularly recruit ITI Machinist trainees/apprentices.

After apprenticeship, candidates are often absorbed or gain preference in permanent recruitment.

ITI Machinists are eligible for SSC, State SSC, DSSSB, ESIC, and other government technician posts where "ITI in Machinist/Turner/Fitter" is mentioned.
